The way Paul Jaarsma paints and teaches is a layered process. The oil painting is built up using a monochrome underpainting (see Figure 1), over which color is applied in transparent layers. (see image 2). It is an ancient glazing technique used by the old masters such as Titian and Leonardo da Vinci. The end result of this painting method is almost magical. When the painting is properly lit, the light passes through the transparent layers of color and reflects back off the underpainting, giving the painting the appearance of an extra dimension.

In addition to painting, Paul has been teaching this painting technique for 20 years in Alkmaar (the Netherlands) and for 15 years in Dokkum and the surrounding area in the Netherlands.

Paul claims that even beginners in painting can learn this oil painting technique, because it is a layered process in which the painting process unfolds step by step, and the student is not immediately overwhelmed by both color and form at the same time. Of course, it’s an advantage to already have some painting experience. Paul also teaches artists who have attended art school but would like to learn a new technique. However, patience is essential with this method of working. Students are not bound to a specific theme; they are free to choose their own subject. Easels are provided at the course locations.
